Gordon Brown will press ahead with toughening up cannabis laws despite claims there is no scientific basis for a change. Should the drug stay a class C drug?

 Spitting image makeover
« Result #2 on Mar 29, 2008, 2:43pm »

Spitting image is to return to our screens after a 12 year absence, but this time they'll be CGI characters and the program will be called Headcases.

It may have been given a digital makeover. But ITV's new version of Spitting Image will still mercilessly poke fun at today's public figures.

And despite the absence of any latex this time around, politicians are once again set to dread Sunday nights.

Instead of being portrayed as puppets the likes of Gordon Brown, Amy Winehouse, Pete Doherty and Prince William will all be captured by CGI-animation.

• Headcases airs on ITV1 on April 6.

 Best Warwickshire village competition
« Result #3 on Mar 15, 2008, 1:47am »
[Quote]

Villages in Warwickshire are being urged to make a name for themselves.

The Rural Communities Council have introduced a competition to help communities celebrate their achievements and lead them into the Calor Village of the year competition.

The Warwickshire Best Village of the year competition has just been launched and information has been sent to the county's villages inviting them to enter.
The search is now beginning for Warwickshire's Calor Village of the Year 2008.

Organisers have updated their competitions so that the focus is on the work villagers do to sustain their community to highlight and celebrate their achievements. They're also encouraging communities that have not participated in previous years to get involved.
Later in 2008, one of the winning villages from Warwickshire will have the added honour of being nominated to go forward and represent their county in the prestigious Calor Village of the year for England Competition 2008/9.
This will give the village the opportunity of gaining recognition at national level as well as a share of a prize fund totalling more than £40,000.
Entry forms for the 2008 competition can be downloaded from www.ruralwarwickshire.org.uk

Closing date is Friday May 30th.

 Tea light candles

Do you use tea light candles, the small stuby candles in the foil cups

If so do you use them without holders? If so your one of the thousands of people that are putting their life at risk by doing so. They aren't designed to be used without being in a heat resistant holder. People are burned, set on fire and buildings set on fire by these candles through incorrect use. One man in a Newcastle pub was badly burned when his clothes were set on fire by a tea light on a drinking shelf. Later on, same pub same circumstances, a girl had her hair set on fire .

Cyndy Harper's son Michael Miller was one of two firefighters killed in a fire in a high rise flat in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in February 2005.
An unattended tealight placed directly on top of a television was blamed for the fatal fire.

Tea lights can melt through plastic tv's set top boxes and computers in fact anything plastic. Tests done with tea lights placed directly on top of tv sets showed that within 45 minutes the candles can melt through the casing spilling molten wax and setting fire to the tv which burns with a thick black smoke.

Tea light holders are cheap enough, is it worth the risk for a few extra pennies, plus they're a lot more attractive that a foil cup.

 Earth Quake
« Result #5 on Feb 27, 2008, 3:06am »

People from across large parts of England have reported an earth tremor.

The BBC has received calls from people in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Manchester, Berkshire and the West Midlands about a "quake".

The tremor could be felt in central Birmingham at about 0100 GMT but it is unclear if it has caused any damage.

The US Geographical Survey's website reported a quake of the magnitude of 4.7 and said the epicentre was 30 miles (50km) south of Kingston-upon-Hull.

The West Midlands was hit by an earthquake in 2002 in the Dudley area that reached 5.0 on the Richter scale and caused damage to homes.

Did you feel the quake? what did you think was happening ?

This is at least the third I've experienced. I'm getting used to them now.

 £10 licence to buy tobacco
« Result #7 on Feb 15, 2008, 11:02pm »
[Quote]

I can't see this having any affect what so ever. A pack of cigarettes is £5 - £6 so hows a £10 licence going to have any affect on anyone.

Smokers could be forced to pay £10 for a permit to buy tobacco if a government health advisory body gets its way.

No one would be able to buy cigarettes without the permit, under the idea proposed by Health England.

Its chairman, Professor Julian Le Grand, told BBC Radio 5 Live the scheme would make a big difference to the number of people giving up smoking.

But smokers' rights group Forest described the idea as "outrageous", given how much tax smokers already pay.

Professor Le Grand, a former adviser to ex-PM Tony Blair, said cash raised by the proposed scheme would go to the NHS.

He said it was the inconvenience of getting a permit - as much as the cost - that would deter people from persisting with the smoking habit.

"You've got to get a form, a complex form - the government's good at complex forms; you have got to get a photograph.

"It's a little bit of a problem to actually do it, so you have got to make a conscious decision every year to opt in to being a smoker."

 defibrillators
« Result #8 on Feb 13, 2008, 10:23pm »

Does any one know if there are any defibrillators in the town? If not where would be the best place for one?

I'd assume that doctors surgeries would have one, maybe leisure centres too.

Busy places 'need heart machines'
More pubs, shopping centres and offices should have defibrillators installed on site, the ambulance service has urged.

The "initial minutes are vital" for a patient in cardiac arrest, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

"The quicker they receive treatment from these life-saving machines, the better their chances of staying alive," a spokesman said.

The service is appealing to busy public places. Its community response team has details on training and funding.

The machines works in addition to rapid response vehicles with trained paramedics, the spokesman added.

Five-seat concept car runs on air
« Result #9 on Feb 13, 2008, 8:49pm »
[Quote]

An engineer has promised that within a year he will start selling a car that runs on compressed air, producing no emissions at all in town.

The OneCAT will be a five-seater with a glass fibre body, weighing just 350kg and could cost just over £2,500.

It will be driven by compressed air stored in carbon-fibre tanks built into the chassis.

The tanks can be filled with air from a compressor in just three minutes - much quicker than a battery car.

Alternatively, it can be plugged into the mains for four hours and an on-board compressor will do the job.

For long journeys the compressed air driving the pistons can be boosted by a fuel burner which heats the air so it expands and increases the pressure on the pistons. The burner will use all kinds of liquid fuel.

The designers say on long journeys the car will do the equivalent of 120mpg. In town, running on air, it will be cheaper than that.
